Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Sinusitis Symptoms

 

          Sinusitis is a condition which is caused by a bacteria and mucus blockage within the sinus cavities.  The sinusitis and the blockage usually starts when a person has a cold or allergy which causes swelling of the sinus cavity lining.  When bacteria enter the cavities and attack the swollen lining, more inflammation takes place which causes the cilia to no longer flush out the bacteria and mucus and they become trapped in the sinus cavities.  Some of the symptoms of sinusitis are congestion, cough, facial pain and pressure, green nasal discharge, postnasal drip.  When the sinusitis lasts for twelve or more weeks it is considered chronic sinusitis and can have additional symptoms such as loss of sense of taste and smell and a person may become fatigued.

 

          There are many treatments for sinusitis and its symptoms.  Oftentimes a person may be prescribed oral antibiotics.  Oral antibiotics work on an infection by traveling throughout the blood stream to the infected area.  In the sinus cavities though, there are few blood vessels, so the oral antibiotic cannot effectively be delivered to the sinusitis infection.  When all other forms of treatment have been exhausted, a physician may recommend sinus surgery.  Sinus surgery is painful and usually only gives temporary relief since only a portion of the infection and the inflammation is removed during surgery, therefore the infection usually ends up returning.
