Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Sinusitis vs. Sinus Infection

Acute bacterial sinusitis is an infection of the sinus cavities caused by bacteria.

It usually is preceded by a cold, allergy attack, or irritation by environmental pollutants.

Unlike a cold, or allergy, bacterial sinusitis requires a physician's diagnosis and treatment with an antibiotic to cure the infection and prevent future complication.

Sinusitis Treatment Antibiotics

In most cases, for sinusitis treatment, you should not resort to antibiotics right away. You should first consider more natural ways to treat your sinusitis. These natural cures offer immediate remedies. Granted, their effects rarely last, but sometimes you just need that temporary relief in order for your immune system to kick in and do some damage to your sinus infection.

After proper diagnosis from your doctor, a medical treatment program may be prescribed for your sinusitis. Treatments range from the simple decongestants and antihistamines, to antibiotics, depending on the severity of your infection.

Antibiotics can be taken orally, intravenously or by inhaling them through a nose spray. Antibiotics kill or prevent the growth of bacteria that causes some sinus infections. The number of days you take antibiotics depends on the severity of your sinusitis and the type of antibiotics you are taking. A different antibiotic may be needed if your condition does not begin to improve within three to five days. The choice of antibiotic depends on which type has worked well for you in the past. Inhaled antibiotics are also available although they are not widely used. Some doctors prefer these kinds of antibiotics because these allow the medication to be applied topically directly to the infected area.

Sinusitis treatment with antibiotics is generally safe and effective. Most people recover completely when they are treated with antibiotics. A ten-day course of the appropriate antibiotic at the proper dosage can cure sinusitis caused by bacterial infection about 90% of the time. If a particular antibiotic is not effective at eliminating the bacteria, or if you do not take it long enough, infection is likely to return.

Taking antibiotics at a lower dose for four to six weeks after the infection clears up may keep the infection from returning. Although not all doctors agree that prolonged treatment helps. There is also the concern that it can lead to the development of bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics

Sinus Dynamics offers a nebulizer that can contain the antibiotics you need for your sinusitis. This device distributes the medication to the source of your sinus problems. There are pharmacists and medical representatives who can assist you in determining the proper treatment for your sinusitis.
