Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Sinusitis vs. Sinus Infection

Acute bacterial sinusitis is an infection of the sinus cavities caused by bacteria.

It usually is preceded by a cold, allergy attack, or irritation by environmental pollutants.

Unlike a cold, or allergy, bacterial sinusitis requires a physician's diagnosis and treatment with an antibiotic to cure the infection and prevent future complication.

Specific Antibiotics Used to Treat Sinusitis

Sinusitis can be treated by taking specific antibiotics that need to be prescribed by a doctor. To learn more about how antibiotics can help you with your sinus problems, talk to your doctor about your condition. There are cases when antibiotics or any kind of drugs are not needed to be rid of your sinusitis. But to understand how antibiotics can play a role in your treatment program, let your doctor know what you are going through with your sinusitis.

Do you feel that your sinuses or some areas of your upper respiratory tract have been infected with bacteria, parasites or fungi? Try to recall if you have been in an environment where you could have gotten these infectious organisms. Are you having symptoms such as fever, facial pain and swelling? Are you experiencing sinusitis for more than 14 days already? If you answered yes to all these posted questions, contact your doctor immediately and find out if you can be prescribed with antibiotics, or whatever will work with your specific condition.

For acute or short term sinusitis, the common prescription used to treat this is to take amoxicillin for 10-14 days. If there is no change in your condition after a few days, you may need a different kind of antibiotic. After more than 20 days, your sinusitis is now classified as a chronic condition and you may need to take broad-spectrum antibiotics.

Again, there is no better way to search for the right antibiotic for you than to involve your doctor. You can find different kinds of solutions everywhere, even a list of the specific antibiotics that you can take. But the one that you should trust best is the solution offered by a health professional who has access to and know-how of up-to-date medical solutions as well as knowledge of your personal medical history.
