Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Sphenoid Sinusitis Problems

 

            Sinusitis is an inflammation condition in the sinus cavities.  Sinusitis begins when a person has existing swelling in the sinus cavities, usually caused by a cold or allergy, which gets attacked by bacteria and as a result greater inflammation of the sinus cavity walls occurs.  When this amount of inflammation occurs, the cilia can no longer flush out the bacteria and mucus, and the sinusitis infection begins.  Some of the problems that a person may have with sinusitis are postnasal drip, green nasal discharge, facial pain and pressure, cough, and congestion.  The sphenoid sinuses are located behind the ethmoid sinuses, deep in the skull.  Some additional problems that a person might have with sphenoid sinusitis are pain in the forehead and pain between the eyes.

 

            There are many treatments for sphenoid and other forms of sinusitis.  Commonly a person may try prescribed and over the counter nasal sprays.  Nasal sprays may only offer relief to the lower part of the sinuses since their particle size is too large to make it past the inflammation at the opening of the sinus cavities and up to the sinusitis infection.  A physician may also prescribe oral antibiotics for a patient.  Oral antibiotics work on many types of infections by traveling through the blood stream to the infected area.  One of the problems with using oral antibiotics on sinusitis infections is that there are only a small amount of blood vessels in the sinus cavities, so it is difficult for an effective amount of antibiotic to be delivered to the sinusitis infection.
