Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Symptoms of Sinusitis Infection

  
A sinusitis infection takes place when the sinuses become inflamed because of a blockage of bacteria in the obstructed sinus cavities, which usually occurs because of a cold or allergy.  There are many symptoms of a sinusitis infection.  Some of the sinusitis infection symptoms that a patient may experience are postnasal drip, facial pain, cough, headache, fever, congestion and green nasal discharge. A sinusitis infection that lasts more than 12 weeks is considered chronic.  With a chronic sinusitis infection a patient may also have nasal obstruction, bad taste in the back of the throat, loss of sense of smell, sore throat, and fatigue.  A common sinusitis infection symptom is a sinus headache.  A sinus headache occurs because of the swelling of the membranes that line the sinuses.  This may cause pain across the forehead, cheeks, and eyes.
