Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Symptoms of a Sinusitis Infection


Sinusitis infections are cause by trapped bacteria and mucus in the sinus cavity.  The bacteria become trapped when bacteria attack the already swollen cavity lining, causing more inflammation in the entrance to the cavity and in the cavities themselves.  The bacteria and mucus can not escape the cavities by way of the cilia because the exit is too inflamed.  There are many symptoms a of a sinusitis infection.  Sometimes patients will experience green posterior pharyngeal discharge, congestion, and persistent upper respiratory infection.  Patients usually will experience symptoms such a post-nasal drip, facial pain, cough, headache, and fever.

 

Sinusitis has many diverse forms of treatment.  One of the most common treatments is oral antibiotics.  Oral antibiotics work on infections when they enter the blood stream and move through it to the area of infection.  Oral antibiotics work on many infections, but in the sinuses, there are a small amount of blood vessels so it is difficult for an effective amount of medication to be distributed into the sinusitis infection.  Nasal sprays are often used and can be prescribed of purchased over the counter.  Nasal sprays do not always work effectively due to their large particle size.  It is difficult for the large particles to travel past the sinus cavity opening because of the inflammation.
