Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Sinusitis vs. Sinus Infection

Acute bacterial sinusitis is an infection of the sinus cavities caused by bacteria.

It usually is preceded by a cold, allergy attack, or irritation by environmental pollutants.

Unlike a cold, or allergy, bacterial sinusitis requires a physician's diagnosis and treatment with an antibiotic to cure the infection and prevent future complication.

Tobramycin Treatment for Sinusitis

Treatment for sinusitis varies and depends on the type and severity of your symptoms. There are numerous ways to treat acute (short term) sinusitis naturally, while medical treatment programs have been proven more effective to cure chronic (long term) sinusitis.

Sinusitis may be difficult to diagnose because it often causes the same symptoms as the common cold or other viral illnesses especially in its early stages. Symptoms of sinusitis are often vague and may not respond well to treatment if a proper diagnosis is not made. It may take time and patience to find a successful treatment.

The use of aerosolized anti-infective medications is one of the treatments for sinusitis. This treatment program involves suspending small particles of anti-infective medication in the solution. A device called a nebulizer is used to create a vapor of this solution and the vapor is inhaled through the nose. With this method, the medication is directly delivered to the infected tissues to fight the infection.

Tobramycin sulfate is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that is used for the treatment of various types of bacterial infections. Like all aminogylcosides, tobramycin does not pass the gastro-intestinal tract. It can only be given intravenously or intramuscularly. It is also often taken as an inhalational antibiotic for the suppression of infections. It is one of the medications mixed into solutions that are used as a treatment for sinusitis.

Tobramycin should only be used to treat bacterial infections. Viral infections such as the common cold cannot be treated with tobramycin. Even if you start to feel better, tobramycin should be taken exactly as directed. Skipping doses or not completing the full course of treatment may decrease the effectiveness of the immediate treatment and the bacterial infection is more likely to develop resistance and will no longer be treatable by tobramycin or other antibacterial drugs in the future.

If tobramycin is right for you, it may be one of the antibiotics that can be mixed into the solution that is taken with a nabulizer. Talk with your doctor and ask about Sinus Dynamics. Sinus Dynamics offers an aerosolized anti-infective treatment program that comes with an easy to use nebulizer. You get just the right dosage of medication when you need it without the hassle of hard to follow instructions and complicated equipment.
