Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Washing Sinuses

 

Washing the sinuses may be the best way of clearing out infections that can disrupt your daily living. It is a good practice, especially for people who experience nasal and sinus problems every now and then in their lives.

 

If you like cheap, easy to acquire, and home based nasal irrigation tools, here are the things you need to gather:

Basin (the kitchen or bathroom sink can also work)

Warm water

Salt

 

Having these three things can complete your nasal irrigation kit. As far as how the washing of the sinuses needs to be done, this would depend on several things. If you are comfortable with inhaling the saltwater solution into one of your nostrils, and then out of the other nostril, then you can go ahead and do this. But you can also just put the solution in one of your hands and let it drip into your nostril (and then out the other).

 

The extent of washing that is required to remove any dirt or nuisance is the other consideration for doing your sinus wash.
