Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain

What Antibiotics are Used to Treat Sinusitis

 

Antibiotics may be needed when symptoms of sinusitis are severe, do not improve and diagnosed to be caused by a bacterial infection. The goal of antibiotics treatment is to cure the infection caused by bacteria with symptoms that last more than 7 - 10 days. Other medications in addition to antibiotics are sometimes taken to relieve pressure and pains caused by sinus drainage and to reduce inflammation of the nose and sinuses caused by the infection.

 

Sinusitis can also be viral. Antibiotics fight infections against bacteria so using antibiotics against viral infections is not beneficial. Whenever antibiotics are prescribed, there should be very good reason for their use. Many believe that antibiotics are the best treatment option for sinusitis but the success of the treatment would depend on how and what antibiotics are used to treat sinusitis.

 

Amoxicillin is often the most popular choice of antibiotic used to treat sinusitis. It is effective and has a few side effects. It should not be used if you are allergic to amoxicillin or have been diagnosed with mononucleosis. Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole may be prescribed for people who are allergic to amoxicillin. Still, other antibiotics may be prescribed to treat bacterial infections that are resistant to amoxicillin and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole.

 

Most antibiotics are safe to take and very effective. Most people recover completely when they are treated with correctly with antibiotics. A 10 day course of the appropriate antibiotic at the proper dosage cures bacterial sinusitis about 90% of the time. If a particular antibiotic is not effective at eliminating the bacteria or if you do not take it long enough, the infection is likely to return. Antibiotics work best when you take them exactly as prescribed.

 

It is important to take all of the medicines your doctor prescribes. Keep taking them even after you begin to feel better. This is especially important when treating sinusitis because antibiotics do not easily penetrate the mucous inside the sinuses and may take awhile before completing treatment.
