Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Wide Spectrum Antibiotics for Sinusitis

 

In most cases, the result of a bacterial infection of the nasal passages is sinusitis. The treatment of symptoms varies and depends on the severity and kind of sinusitis you have. Natural cures and home remedies are becoming more and more popular to patients because they provide instant relief and are readily available.

 

If symptoms do not respond to these home remedies or they keep coming back, you have to consult your physician to get a proper diagnosis. There may be severe symptoms that you cannot fix yourself or there can also be complications to your sinusitis. Antibiotics may be needed to cure you of these symptoms.

 

A wide spectrum of antibiotics is available for sinusitis. The kind of sinusitis you have and the severity will determine what kind of antibiotics you need. The choice of antibiotics will also depend on what kind of antibiotics worked well for you in the past. If a certain kind was normally prescribed for your sinusitis and it has been proven successful, it is more likely that that kind will be prescribed again. If there was no improvement before, another kind may be tried.

 

The usual choice of antibiotics is amoxicillin. It has a large percentage of effectiveness and very few noted side effects. Before using amoxicillin, make sure you are not allergic to it and/or you do not have mononucleosis (a viral infection with flu-like symptoms). An alternative to amoxicillin is trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. A wide spectrum of antibiotics is available to treat bacterial infection for those resistant to amoxicillin and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. Ask your doctor for more options.

 

The typical duration for a round of antibiotics is 10-14 days. Take note of the correct dosage and follow instructions carefully. You will start to feel better in as little as three days. Even if you start feeling better, do not stop taking the antibiotics. The infection may come back. If no improvements occur after 14 days of taking antibiotics, see your doctor. You may need to take a different kind of antibiotic. Or further tests may be needed, as there may be underlying complications to your sinusitis.
